Approaching Ali: “Act II”
ALO branches into new American opera

Recently, bestselling author Davis Miller came back home to North Carolina to discuss his newest work, Approaching Ali: A Reclamation in Three Acts with ALO Artistic Director David Craig Starkey. Approaching Ali has recently been translated from page to stage and has become one of the newest works of American opera. During the August lecture, Starkey asked about various components of Miller’s writing; from Ali and Miller’s friendship, to Miller’s introduction to opera.

Act I’s audience got access to one-of-a-kind documents, pictures, and video of Ali’s life and the friendship that sparked through unlikely commonalities between Miller and Ali.

Due to overwhelming interest from the audience, this coming lecture (September 9th) includes performances from acclaimed singers Carl Dupont and Ted Federle.

Carl DuPont, is a vocalist, researcher, and educator from Daytona Beach, FL. He has performed as a soloist with the Rochester Oratorio Society, Southwest Florida Symphony, and the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra. Lately, he has been celebrated for his “dramatic, dark tones” (South Florida Classical Review) on stage as Leporello in Don Giovanni, the title character in Dennis Rodman in North Korea, and Jim in Porgy and Bess at the Palacio de Bellas Artes in Mexico City. However, the intimacy of the solo recital is his preferred métier, and sharing the wealth of songs by black composers; a particular passion.

Ted Federle is a singer based in Winston-Salem, NC and recently graduated from University of North Carolina School of the Arts as part of the A.J. Fletcher Opera Institut. He made his 2014 debuts with NC Opera in Opera in the Pines, and Pensacola Opera as Moralès and Dancaïro with a cover of Escamillo in their production of Carmen as well as Guglielmo in Così fan tutte. He was cast in the last performance of Approaching Ali.

They will be performing highlights from Approaching Ali, Miller’s one-act opera. This is an exclusive look into the intimacy of this piece, and an enlightening look into the life of The Greatest of All Time. ALO encourages you to come to this lecture, Friday September 9th, from 3 to 5 PM, to glimpse into modern opera and the life of Muhammad Ali.
