Eighth blackbird’s music is refreshingly original, imaginative, quirky,
provocative and beautiful – often full of technical and intellectual
challenges but also bursting with vitality and fun. This young and
phenomenally gifted sextet from the Oberlin Conservatory, depends on a
diverse cast of musical instruments such as the vibraphone,
glockenspiel, bongos, snare drum, tom-toms, kick drum, bass drum, cymbal
and tam-tam to name a few, allowing them to stretch their artistic
muscles. Finally, the ensemble integrates theatre-based movement into
their performance as a subtle recognition that live musical performance
doesn’t begin and end with the notes. The group’s mix of bold repertory
and visually enticing stage movement creates an ideal way of looking at,
and listening to, new music.
