Premiere: January 10 & 11 2011 by the WILLIASMBURG SYMPHONIA at Kimball Theatre in Williamsburg, VA.
From the title page of the old book of rounds: “Catch that Catch Can – A choice collection of Catches, Rounds, and Canons for three or four voices” was collected and published by John Hilton. It was printed in London for John Benson and John Playford and was to be sold in St. Dunstan’s Churchyard, and in the Inner Temple near the Church door, 1652”
Catch that Catch Can for chamber orchestra is based on a number of the rounds found in this collection. Over the course of many months, I chose and studied my favorite melodies to feature in the work. Throughout the 10-minutes long piece, these “catchy” tunes intertwine throughout the orchestra creating varying effects of stretto, canon, and echo.
Catch that Catch Can is scored for flute, piccolo, 2 oboes, clarinet, bass clarinet, 2 bassoons; 2 horns, 2 trumpets, 1 percussion, strings
