Sound Harmonies with Air was composed with a basic principle in mind: simple chords stretched out over the length of the piece with a melody on top. In this work, I made a pre-compositional decision to slow the harmonic progressions to a standstill. The structure of the piece consists of a chord progression that is transposed three times. Each time the progression is transposed, the length of the chords is shortened by thirty-three percent. Within the framework of each section, there are very low notes which enter opposite of the echoing air that is performed by the live ensemble. The original version of this work was commissioned by the Walden School for the Wet Ink Ensemble and was premiered in Dublin, NH in June 2009. This version was specifically arranged for eighth blackbird, who premiered the work at the University of Richmond in 2011.
